This is the natural course of popularity going paid. I am not sure whether it is the privilege of the rich to be able to read article ( like in medium) or it is an exclusion of the poor to be prevented from reading the articles.
Dr A.F., thanks for asking! In this instance, ars poetica addresses this for us:
i.e.
"... and if you can’t pay? that’s okay. my monthly letter will still be here, open-palmed, and for everyone, completely free.
if you would like to be part of this circle but cannot afford it now—please reply to this email and speak with me about your situation. i will arrange a complimentary subscription. words should not be behind gates.
but if you do feel you can spare a few dollars each month— if you’ve ever read a piece of mine and felt some part of it stay behind with you— i hope you will consider supporting my work."
My thoughts? Hmmm ... our ars poetica suggests, compared to many, only a very modest monthly/annual fee . Tho' in my currency, I pay 30% over each USdollar, I may decide to subscribe; I do deem it FAIR for a creative person to encourage support of his/her/their endeavours!
Yet, as an appreciative reader, I've also mixed feelings about paying. After all, most substack authors share key writing for free, some much more generously than others as is their prerogative. Myself, I can't afford to pay for all the substack creators that delight me, So I pick and choose, or wait awhile to decide. 🤔 The choice is mine. Now, I'm leaning toward going 'paid' here, pleased at the affordability for a pensioner like me, and despite my introverted dislike of zoom gatherings and such, out of true delight with ars poetica and a wish to nurture her work.
Oh my goodness, ars poetica -- big hug of thanks for this gift. Feels like a door has sprung open to an enriching world, full of light and wondrous shadow too. Bright blessings to you, here on the threshold of my turning 80!
it is not my intention for my words to be behind gates.

this is more an option for those who can afford to support me, and would like to be able to, to do so.
thank you for being here. i spend much time writing these letters in between working and studying.
it is my dream to reinvest any support i am given back into ars to write more and create more.
please let me know if you would like a free subscription. <3
ars poetica, yours is the Substack I look forward to reading the most...I noticed I wasn't receiving email notifications of new posts and panicked! I found you again, and very much like unplugging a printer to reset, I unsubscribed and resubscribed and am thankfully getting the emails again. What this tells me -- and what I'm telling you -- is that you are a wonder and I value your art. I'm happy to pay for a subscription and to support a fellow artist and lover girl. Like another reader commented: when I read your posts, I feel more alive and, I'll add, less alone. Less like a weirdo to see the beauty in all things. The post you wrote about travelling on a train still lives in me, a little kitten I carry in my pocket. Thank you!
I've always been skeptical of Commerce. I cannot afford the extra monthly fee. I think poetry is even more beautiful and elegantly lovely when the Muse inspires us even higher, deeper, softer, and warmer. I do have mixed feelings about this sudden option to profit from your subscribers.
I do wish Art would be spread freely and without clauses. I've attempted to share my own words online. I've never understood the whole audience of one. Self-love and self-worth is something I struggle with even into adulthood. I try to be honest with things. I am so proud of your writings. I hope you don't alienate the ones who advocate for you. Congratulations.
Every time I read ars poetica I feel a little bit more alive and a lot more grateful.
this is so kind- thank you.
I 100% agree. In LOVE with just about every piece, from Ars Poetica's pieces. Beauty-full ~ 🩷
again: thank you. <3
I'm so happy for you. Keep growing. This is a special place. Subbed!
thank you for your support <3

thank you catharine for reading the piece so carefully and for noting this here. <3
also- i have gifted you a free paid subscription. it is not my intention to make money from your pension.
it warms me to know you have found Beauty in this little corner of the internet, and that you can take it with you into your days.
and thank you for letting that be known to me.
Oh my goodness, ars poetica -- big hug of thanks for this gift. Feels like a door has sprung open to an enriching world, full of light and wondrous shadow too. Bright blessings to you, here on the threshold of my turning 80!
Looking forward eagerly ... ☺️
of course! thank you for being here. <3
hello,
it is not my intention for my words to be behind gates.

Always,

i have just gifted you a free lifetime paid subscription.
as i wrote in the piece above, i will be doing this for anyone who cannot afford to support my work.
my words will never be behind gates.
this is more an option for those who can afford to support me, and would like to be able to, to do so.
thank you for being here. i spend much time writing these letters in between working and studying.

That is more than generous
My words will never be behind walls
it is nothing. as i said, i am happy to do this for anyone who is not in a position to financially support the work here.
words should never be behind gates.
perhaps, unless, someone can lovingly open the gate for others.
